Imperial Guard Medals - Colored by Renquist-von-Reik Imperial Guard Medals - Colored by Renquist-von-Reik
I just finished a new Imperial Guard medal featured in the middle of the image - the Medusa V victory medal! It's pictured here with my two older designs but I decided to do something new and paint them up in full color this time.

They are cast resin hanging from grosgrain ribbon drapes. The extra bits on the center medal are styrene plastic.

For the Emperor!

Wow, cool! They'd be perfect for a Warhammer 40,000 campaign medal or something to whoever wins. I'll consider buying them. Thanks for the link.

The one in the middle looks like a resin cast of a button that I had on a Hot Topic jacket. I should go see if I still have it......

LOL, the one in the middle is the only one that's not an original design but it's not from Hot Topic ;)

It's from Warhammer 40k and actually is a medal of honor awarded to Imperial Guardsmen. It's called the Medusa Star and it was awarded to all Cadian regiments who served during the Medusa V campaign (info taken from the Imperial Munitorum Manual)

I couldn't decide what color to paint the medals on my sergeant so I decided to just go with this color scheme. One black, one red, one blue.

Thanks! I'm glad you like them

These were sculpted in a combination of thin cardboard for the basic shapes built up with clay for the details. They were cast in Smooth-On Smooth Cast 321.

These are painted with acrylics (citadel and liquitex ranges) over an auto body primer

I thought primer didn't stick well to resin. Would it work if you painted something, and then put resin on top of it ?

It depends on the specific primer, some work perfectly on resin while others don't -- at all.

Your idea could be made to work, but it's risky. The first thing is without a primer paint won't stick evenly to your resin. You'll have a hard time getting a solid consistent color as the paint slides around without getting a grip on the surface. Secondly, what could eventually happy is the resin top will separate from the base tearing up the paint in the middle. Since the paint doesn't have a good hold on the base it's a weak point that can come undone.

That said, if you can get the paint on nicely the resin top might hold forever, but I'd seriously recommend just getting a primer! It makes painting much easier and why risk it ;)

They take their duty very serious! If I don't lock them down they're off trying to award themselves to the worthy somewhere. Many times I've woken up to find one of my cats sporting a couple of medals giving me haughty look that says, "Not giving me food this instant will be considered heresy and dealt with in an appropriate manner..."

:D

I suppose you can consider them akin to the commissars of the house, making sure the rest of us fulfill our responsibilities to the God-Emperor of Catkind...provide food on schedule and clean the litter in a timely manner, among other such duties.

The penalties for failing are quite painful!

But the HOTI is the most prestigious medal. He will either put it on top of all the others or he will wear it as a badge on his hat.
