Warhammer 40k Chainsword Replica by Renquist-von-Reik Warhammer 40k Chainsword Replica by Renquist-von-Reik
A life sized replica chainsword from Warhammer 40k.

I've been working on this for about a month now and after a lot of blood, sweat, and tears I am happy to say it is finally completed! It's based on the design by Studio Oxmox for THQ that was given away as promotional prizes with the release of the Space Marine video game. This measures 37" tip to tip and weighs around 4lbs.

Constructed out of lots of materials -
The handle is resin cast around pvc pipe which forms the grip itself and runs about 2 feet into the blade to give it strength and stability. The blade is pink foam sheathed in MDF and then fiber glass for extra strength! The details on the blade are mostly styrene plastic with some resin bits as well.

The inscription on the side reads in High Gothic "Imperator Dentes Ruminant Omnes" which roughly translates to - The Emperor's Teeth Chew All.

The Hilt reads "Pax Imperium" which translates in essence to - The entire world (galaxy) is the Imperium, or basically we rule all!

Painted with an airbrush and by hand using acrylic paints and given many coats of spray varnish to protect it on the bloody battlefields of the 41st millennium!

Thanks for looking!

If you'd like to see the behind the scenes as to how I built this check out my latest blog post. I have a build log with pictures and descriptions of the process! You can view my blog HERE!

Here's some other shots of the chainsword:

The inscription on the side translates roughly to "emperor of all the teeth chew".
Great chainblade by the way.

How did you so accurately cut out the blades? I'm trying to make an Eldar Striking Scorpion chainblade and I'm having a pain in the ass of a time trying to make it.

Do you mean all the chainsaw teeth on the blade? I sculpted on tooth in clay and made a mold of it, then I cast as many as I needed in resin! Much easier than trying to make each tooth individually and ensuring they all match ;)

I am really happy I stumbled on your site. THQ made a few chainswords with project triforce but who knows when those are for purchase.

It is so cool you could make this.

I want it.

Probably more than you'd think. In the end I think the materials came to $150-200! That's for pink foam, mdf board, styrene sheet plastic, gorilla glue, wood glue, super glue, paints, bass wood, mold rubber, resin, vinyl letters, fiberglass resin and cloth, pvc pipe, brad nails, primer, varnish, leather, copper wire, foam sheet...I think that's a complete list of materials that went into this! Of course, the most costly thing was the time it took! :D

I spent $150 on my witch hunter hat. $200 for a chain sword doesn't sound too bad to be honest. Totally worth the time and money considering I cosplay every 3 months it seems. Thanks for the heads up on the price though. Gives me a goal to work towards. Might use some of your methods that you used here to make myself a laspistol...or 5.

Good luck if you try to build one yourself! It was a lot of fun seeing it come to life :)

Well I made one and had a lot of expensive mistakes...so I'm going to call it a prototype. It's good enough to walk around a con with, but not nearly good enough for what I really have in mind. Thanks again for the tutorial. Pretty much followed it word for word, but applies it to a Cadian pattern chainsword.

All of the want! And I'd love to see someone do a Powerfist replica too. How much would you charge if someone were to commission one of these chainswords?

That is probably one of the best custom built chainswords I've ever seen . . . period!

Love the shape and work on the teeth. I also really like the caution striping and ... well, everything here is spot on perfect so let's leave it at that. :)
